Alexa Klettner
Professor of Experimental Retinology
Motivation to join Alliance as a mentor for Blue Growth
As a researcher in the field of biomedical application of marine compounds, Alexa wishes to share her expertise and experience. This gives her the opportunity to support interesting projects, interact with innovative groups, find new collaboration and extend her network.
As a professor of Experimental Retinology, Alexa is interested in finding new therapies for ophthalmological diseases and especially to utilize the resources of the ocean, as the compounds found in marine organisms offer vast opportunities for new applications and therapeutics. She is the head of the research lab of the Department of Ophthalmology of the University of Kiel, University Hospital (UKSH). UKSH is the main provider for health care in the region and a big university with 27.000 students. The university has a strong reputation both in medical research and in marine research. The lab in the ophthalmology department focuses on the development of new therapies against age-related macular degeneration. A current project where UKSH is the lead partner is the InterReg5a funded “FucoSan – Health from the Sea” where our consortium investigates the extraction, characterization and application of fucoidan in health and cosmetics.Market active/interested
